Another approach could be an electromagnetic pulse from the "Sun" in the center that causes the circuitry of the planets to generate the heat necessary for the adjusted shift (according to the synods of the planets etc.) An Orrery without arms - imagine that! This might also help in future watches that have astral complications, or for that matter, alarm clocks based on the ambient light (temperature of the magnetite changing because of the sunlight available).
