La Machine à Ecrire le Temps
April 28th, 02009 by Alexander Rose

La Machine à Ecrire le Temps (translates to The Machine that Writes the Time). A gorgeous piece presented at Baselworld 2009. Our first versions of the Clock prototype worked with analog time that was converted through via a digital adder to time outputs, but it never occurred to me to write it out on paper… Reminds me of the so very cool Difference Engine printer. My thought is that the Clock (LN) could maybe have a writing mechanism to give the most exact time possible to every person that visits it. … I had this thought before the last time I was in Seattle. They have machines there (which are in all the big cities) that you put a penny into and turn the crank and out pops a specially “Seattle” engraved penny. Perhaps the Clock could do something similar. … as to what materials, who knows? … Stone was actually my first thought – as it’s in such abundance.

We have thought about having a raised text surface of at least the date that allows you to make a rubbing of the day you visited. How to give people ownership of that moment is something that we discuss a lot, and welcome ideas on.
