The Long News: stories that might still matter fifty, or a hundred, or ten thousand years from now.

slums

There have been a flurry of reports in the last few weeks which try to anticipate how climate change may impact human populations.

1. Two trends (urbanization and global warming) seem to be on a collision course: UN: Growth of slums boosting natural disaster risk

2. A first step towards further regulation, at least in the US: EPA declares fossil fuel emissions a health threat

3. A study from the Institute for Global Health: Doctors’ health warning on climate change

4. And from the World Wildlife Fund: Climate change threatens millions who live off sea

“Climate change” happens every day. “Long-term, harmful, human-caused” climate change is an unproven, and largely unproveable, politically-driven theory. For an association as well-grounded as yours to even acknowledge such nonsense is very disappointing.

Ulysses, global warming is not political hokum. The science is well established and well grounded. Republicans and the Fox News echo chamber do their best to muddy the issue and make it political.

Seriously, who would you trust regarding science: NASA or Rush Limbaugh, the NSA or Glenn Beck, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography or Al Gore?

What's going on with global warming is the same thing that was going on with cigarette smoking. Industry insiders are using the media to muddy the waters and confuse the people on the issue. It will take decades to overcome this industry lead confusion.

Here's the thing, if global warming is real, and we're delaying taking action on it, we're pretty much guaranteeing extinction of 80% of life on Earth, most likely including us. If the scientists are wrong, the worst that would happen is the US would become energy independent from the Middle East and we'd have cleaner energy technology that is sustainable for the long haul.

Taking action is better for humans and industry for the long haul, sitting on our hands is wreckless and irresponsible.
