Visualization of 5,000 Years of War

1100Lab has developed a visualization mapping all of the battles in Wikipedia in the last 5,000 years. Their blog details how they compiled the data, as well as other projects by the Netherlands based research and development firm.

    I’d expect a bit more explicit comment on the limits of focusing on those identifiable by place and date. It might also be of some interest to plot the use of written language across the same period. I suspect there have been more than a few “battles” in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Amazonian basin, for instance.
